Picking the right target format
Different jobs call for different formats, and converting is how you switch between them without re-shooting or re-exporting from another app. As a rule of thumb: choose JPG for photographs you need to share widely, PNG when you must keep transparency or want a lossless copy of a graphic or screenshot, and WebP when you're publishing to the web and want the smallest file at good quality. Converting iPhone HEIC photos
A very common reason to convert is the HEIC (HEIF) format iPhones use by default. It's efficient, but plenty of websites, Windows PCs and older apps can't open it. Drop a .heic file here and choose JPEG (or PNG) to get a file that opens anywhere — decoded right in your browser, so personal photos never get uploaded. What happens to transparency
JPG can't store transparency, so when you convert a transparent PNG or WebP to JPG, those see-through areas have to be filled with a solid color — you choose which (white by default). If keeping transparency matters, convert to PNG or WebP instead. After converting, if the new file is larger than you'd like, the image compressor will bring the size down.
